Headway Essex – BTMK’s Charity of the Year

BTMK has been proud to support Headway Essex as its charity of the year – the year ended on the 31st August and although some final calculations are still being done it appears that a total in excess of £16,000 has been raised for the charity.

Headway is the UK-wide charity that works to improve life after brain injury. Through its network of groups and branches across the UK, it provides support, services and information to brain injury survivors, their families and carers, as well as professionals in the health and legal fields.

Headway Essex is a regional group with whom BTMK Injury has formed a close association over many years. They offer a combination of day care and community care services and by doing so aim to ensure that people with acquired brain injury fulfil their potential, families and carers are better able to cope with their caring role and that the wider community understands the causes and effects of acquired brain injury.

The charity year officially began on the 1st September 2016 although we were cheeky enough to include funds raised a little earlier at BTMK’s 2016 Golf Day.

The marathon for the year (and he certainly found it to be such) was a sponsored weight loss by Alan Bacon, a BTMK Injury director. A good number of very generous folk agreed to sponsor him on a pound for pound basis whilst others were kind enough to contribute fixed amounts. Overall he lost exactly 2 stone (28 pounds) in weight. Spookily when weighed in on the 31st August he had lost 28 pounds to the exact quarter pound. This seemed very unlikely but is borne out by photographs (the question of their authenticity was questioned by one or two who on reflection wondered whether Alan would be insulted by this suggestion – his response was that he may have lost weight but that his skin remains as thick as ever).

The year ended on the evening of the 31st August with a Beach Ball held at Thorpe Hall Golf Club. The theme of the evening is clear from the title and we think that all who joined us will have enjoyed themselves by the seaside with all the trimmings. Although we could not go to the originals we were also very well entertained by the Beached Boys who took us through a number of Beach Boys songs. Not quite California but close.

BTMK are very happy to have raised the funds they have for Headway Essex and would thank all of those who have offered such generous support throughout the year. Thanks should also be extended to the BTMK Injury team who worked very hard throughout the year on the various events and in particular the Beach Ball.

Like most charities Headway Essex face financial challenges to the continuity of their invaluable services. We are pleased to have done our little bit to help and wish them and their clients well.
